well i know im kinda late but someone needs to answer... lol
1st thing is 1st thoe... we all have our own personal opinions and beliefs so what i say shall only be of opinion (it wont make you any less rican unless you belive so).
overall, to me Boricua means culture. The ability to communicate fluently in your native language or the strenght and will power to learn how to do it. I've seen ricans who cant speak it but thoes who have no intentions of attempting and learning just make the overall "Boricua" term look bad. That's a stab at our overall culture (even thoe its usualy the parents fault).
A boricua should also know of our food. I mean, if you claim to be boricua and dont have any idea on what arroz con gandules is... well... lets just say "manicomio".
Lastly, to know something about the island. Present, Past, Future... doesnt matter. Just know a lil something about it even if you've never been there. Start with where the flag originated and move on up...
THINGS THAT IRRITATE ME:
"To be boricua you have to dress like ___________"Bullshit. We all have our own likes and dislikes in life. it's part of being HUMAN.
"To be boricua you have to be born on the island."I don't know about you, but as an "ethnicity", American isnt exactly an option. Also, It doesnt matter where you are born. You will have the same DNA structure. (Just my opinion of course, no one go "Hitler" on me.)
